Usana was tested by ConsumerLab.com in 2011, along with 37 other top multivitamin and multimineral products in the American and Canadian markets. Various factors were considered in the test, which Usana passed, including compliance with U.S. Pharmacopeia guidelines on solubility, lead contamination threshold based on California Proposition 65 , U.S. Food and Drug Administration labeling guidelines, and certain index elements. Usana products are sold chiefly through non-employee “associates” or distributors and online. Associates get their commissions based on their own sales and those of new distributors they have recruited, or their “downlines.” Under the company’s compensation scheme, commissionable “points” can be earned for sales volume. Before they can start selling, distributors are made to sign an agreement banning them from making health claims to sell Usana products, and from making misleading claims about the income they make from their sales. Usana has provided sponsorships to a long list of athletic organization through its “Athlete Guarantee Program.” The program chooses athletes to be sponsored, with the company promising that should any selected athlete test positive for banned substances as a result of consuming Usana products, he or she will be compensated up to twice their present yearly income up to 1 million USD. In 2006, Usana also entered into an agreement with the WTA to co-sponsor athletes, and five years later, this was extended. The 2011 agreement includes Usana giving $1 to the Children’s Hunger Fund with every ace that would be scored at a WTA tournament, right from Wimbledon to the end of the season. In 2003, Usana became the USANA Ampitheatre’s title sponsor, a 20,000-seating outdoor ampitheature built in West Valley City, Utah. United Concerts, in 2012, announced Usana would keep its naming rights until March 2018.
